COURSE METHODS & OUTCOMES:

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES:

The purpose of this course is to provide you with exposure to and knowledge of a number of different topics that relate to accounting systems.

After successfully completing this course you will be able to:

    • Determine the data flow of transactions through a business. This includes examining each business transaction and preparing the appropriate business document in a hands-on project.
    • Create a business using accounting software and prepare all accounting transactions in the accounting cycle. Software utilized includes Excel and QuickBooks.
    • Analyze business transactions to ensure controls and segregation of duties are in place to mitigate fraud within an organization.
    • Design a system of internal controls with the related policies and procedures for an integrated accounting information system.

This course will attempt to combine a theoretical approach and a practical, hands-on approach. All projects will be done on an individual basis. While we encourage you to consult with your fellow students regarding clarification of lecture materials and computer-related problems you may encounter, we expect each one of you to do the projects yourself. It is difficult, if not impossible, to learn manual/computer accounting information systems without the student actually doing the analysis, recording, posting, balancing, and performing the internal control procedures. You should be aware of the fact that you will have to take the primary responsibility for learning accounting information systems. We are here to explain, guide, and help, but we cannot do the work for you.

ASSESSMENT GUIDELINES:

 MAKE-UP POLICY

All graded events are expected to be completed by the due date published in the syllabus. Any graded event that is not completed by the due date published in the syllabus is subject to a late penalty of up to 20%.

PROJECTS

Project 1 Systems Understanding Aid – The Systems Understanding Aid (SUA) project is a manual project that will require you to process monthly transactions and perform month-end and year-end procedures. Students will be require to scan and submit PDFs of project documents via Moodle upload.  All documents, workpapers, and financial schedules must be prepared with pen/pencil and paper. Use of Word or Excel to prepare any items is prohibited.

Project 2 Internal Controls – Students will write a paper and memo on the function and importance of internal controls related to tasks performed in an accounting information system. Assignments must be completed in Microsoft Word.

Project 3 Microsoft Excel – Students will work in Excel, looking at and working with intermediate and advanced features and functions. Project 3 will evaluate your knowledge of skills you learn during Excel lectures and discussions in class. You must use the Excel formulas, features and functions covered in class to complete this project. Manual keying/entry of figures and data is not acceptable and may result in loss of points.

If you are not already familiar with Excel basics or need a refresher, the following website contains excellent tutorial videos:

Project 4 QuickBooks (SUA Waren Computerized Accounting) – A PC with Windows 7 or 10 is required to complete this project in QuickBooks. Students will prepare the manual SUA project completed in Project 1 in the QuickBooks software application.

Because the projects are graded, instructors and tutors cannot answer specific questions related to the proper accounting treatment, computations, or presentation. Students may ask questions regarding clarification of details and project requirements.

Note: Students will need software or an app that scans documents into PDF format to submit assignments for the course. The practice of accounting has largely gone paperless. In this course you will learn to use technology that you can expect to use in the real world.

EXAMS & QUIZZES

Two exams each worth 100 points will be administered during the course. The Mid-Term and Final Exams may be a combination of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank and short answer questions. You may also be required to prepare an Excel worksheet or process QuickBooks transactions and submit as part of the exams. The Mid-Term exam will cover the manual SUA Project 1, Chapters 1 through 7 of the SUA Reference book and Excel material. The Final Exam is cumulative and will cover QuickBooks computerized accounting, Excel material and general accounting information systems topics covered on the Mid-Term.

Three quizzes worth 10 points each will be administered during the first half of the semester. The quizzes cover material in the SUA Reference book and may cover Excel material as announced. The quizzes may be a combination of multiple choice, fill-in-the-blank and short answer completions. Quiz 1 will cover Chapters 1 and 2 of the SUA Reference book; Quiz 2 will cover Chapters 3 and 4 of the SUA Reference book; Quiz 3 will cover Chapters 5 through 7 of the SUA Reference book. Excel material on quizzes will come from Excel topics covered during the respective week.

Exams and quizzes will be administered online. The time allowed for each exam and quiz is indicated on the "Attention" page for each exam and quiz. You may access this page without "opening" the exam or quiz. The time allowed begins when you open the exam or quiz. Quizzes and exams are not open for an entire week as you may be used to for courses delivered entirely online. All quizzes and exams open at 1 a.m. the day of scheduled class meetings and close at 11:59 p.m. the day of scheduled class meetings unless announced otherwise. (In other words, quizzes and exams are open to take for a period of about 23 hours.) If you go past the due date time, the exam or quiz will be submitted automatically and your score will be based on the information that was submitted for that exam or quiz. If you do not take a quiz or exam, a score of zero points will be recorded for that graded event.

You must take the exams and quizzes in the proper week indicated by the 11-Week Assignment Schedule in this syllabus.

NOTE: Once you begin an exam or quiz, you cannot log in to Moodle using another electronic device or another browser window. If you do, your original Moodle session will terminate. You can only attempt a quiz or exam once; therefore, if your session terminates, your score for that exam or quiz will be zero.

NOTE: Do not take quizzes or exams using mobile devices like an iPhone, iPad, etc. The Moodle interface with those devices may not display your quiz or exam properly.

 IMPORTANT EXAM AND QUIZ GUIDELINES

Realize that delaying exams, quizzes, and homework submission until the deadline poses a risk that could affect your grade in the course. Family responsibilities, job requirements, and health issues could unfortunately prevent you from completing the assignment. You are encouraged to complete all assignments well before the deadline.

If you do encounter any unusual technical issues when accessing or completing an exam, send an email to your professor AND to onlinesupport@walshcollege.edu at the time you experience the problem. Do not wait until the next day. This enables our tech support staff to pull audit logs to facilitate investigation of your issue.

If you lose your connection, you can usually simply re-enter the exam and complete it within the allotted timeframe - the clock does keep ticking, however.

QUESTIONS PRIOR TO EXAMS AND QUIZZES

Email communication with your instructor is encouraged throughout the semester. Do not wait until the last minute to ask questions regarding graded events. The instructor will make every attempt to answer questions promptly, but it may not be possible to answer questions that are received less than 24 hours before an assignment, quiz or exam due date and time.

 HOMEWORK

Three homework assignments related to the SUA project will be collected in Weeks 2, 3, and 4. The purpose of these assignments is to ensure students are working through the SUA material at an appropriate pace. Each assignment is worth 10 points.

Three homework assignments covering QuickBooks material will be collected for grading in Weeks 8, 9, and 10. Each assignment is worth 20 points.

 COURSE COMMUNICATION

You must use your Walsh email for all email communications. Students should check their email and the Moodle announcements from the instructor often. Please allow a 24 hour response time for emails. If you do not receive a response, please send your message again.

COURSE SYLLABUS

Note that the time summary and syllabus are guides which are subject to change as circumstances deem necessary. The instructor may delay some project due dates as circumstances dictate, but project due dates will never be due earlier than stated here in the syllabus.

It is our responsibility to teach accounting information systems, not fix hardware and/or software problems. If you encounter technical difficulties or problems with the QuickBooks access code, you will need to contact the publisher directly for assistance. Use this link to contact the publisher: http://www.armonddalton.com/contact-us/. Your efforts in addressing and solving computer-related hardware and software issues are imperative to conducting an efficient and effective experience for students.
